Bruno Mars and French electronic musician Gesaffelstein participated in the recording of "Mayhem". The first can be heard in the song "Die With a Smile", the second - in "Killah". Businessman and entrepreneur Michael Polansky, Lady Gaga's fiancé, also worked on the material. He co-wrote many tracks. And when creating "Abracadabra", Gaga used a sample from "Spellbound" by Siouxsie and the Banshees - the band members are listed in the song's output.

Lady Gaga says she was “scared” about making Mayhem:

“Mayhem happened because Michael said, ‘You need to make a pop album.’ And he was right. I did. But I didn’t realize how scared I was about making this album. I thought it wasn’t part of me anymore, that the music I made early in my career was behind me, but I realized that all of those things are still in me.”

When announcing Mayhem, Lady Gaga talked about the musical diversity and influences of many genres and artists: 1990s alternative, French electronica, David Bowie, Prince. The singer also hinted at the similarities between the new album and her early records – and the hit “Bad Romance” in particular.

With Mayhem, Gaga turns to the dark aesthetic and sounds that fans loved when she swallowed rosary beads and posed with corpses early in her career. The lyrics and videos for “Abracadabra” and “Disease” reference that, but they also represent a more sophisticated Gaga, with 16 years, 14 Grammys, and seven albums under her belt.

I wanted to go back to the old stuff, but also break new ground, which I think is hard to do,” she says of Mayhem. “There are a few moments on the album where someone might be like, ‘Oh, this reminds me of this,’ because I have my own style, but I tried to take it to a new level musically.” She names “Killah,” an industrial-funk track featuring Gesaffelstein, as her favorite song of all time. Toward the end of the album, she performs the eerie love song “Blade of Grass,” about her fiancé Michael Polansky’s proposal. And she pays homage to the late Rick Genest, aka Zombie Boy, by naming the song after the iconic Born This Way model.

“I’m someone who can definitely feel insecure, but this record is me at my most confident. And that’s part of Mayhem’s journey as a night. If you think of the album as a night, it’s like that moment of the night when you feel your best.”

Lady Gaga’s new release is currently number one on iTunes in 28 countries and Apple Music in six countries.
